We are excited to invite you to the launch of the NAUTILUS Genset demonstrator on October 29, 2024, from 14:00 to 17:00 at DLR e.V. (Pfaffenwaldring 38-40, 70569 Stuttgart, Germany).
The NAUTILUS Genset is a highly efficient maritime power system that integrates fuel cells and battery technology, with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions in shipping by more than 50% and non-CO2 emissions by over 90%. This demonstrator is the key outcome of the NAUTILUS project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No. 861647.
The NAUTILUS project is a significant step toward reducing GHG emissions by 50%, while nearly eliminating other major engine exhaust gases and particulate emissions through the gradual replacement of internal combustion engines with electrochemical processes. Furthermore, the fuel flexibility of the NAUTILUS system offers the potential for even greater emission reductions in the future, as it aims to utilize sustainable fuels.
The integrated Genset enhances the transient behaviour of the SOFC system, combined with batteries, to fully meet a ship’s energy requirements during operation, manoeuvring, and accommodating hotel loads. The goal of the project is to develop the process design, a digital demonstrator of the on-board energy system, a physical proof of concept (PoC 30 kWe SOFC and battery), and a modularized functional demonstrator (60 kWe SOFC and battery).
Both the digital design and the physical demonstrator will be evaluated against maritime safety regulations. Emissions from the Genset demonstrator will be characterized to confirm the feasibility of achieving the 2030 emissions targets outlined by the IMO directives.
The launch of the NAUTILUS Genset represents the successful culmination of more than four years of collaboration, expertise, and dedication by 15 consortium members. The NAUTILUS Genset launch offers a unique opportunity to witness the future of sustainable maritime energy systems.
